Known for my watercolours of flowers and plants, my approach to the medium combines an interest in detailed work with abstract effects created by water and pigments. Spontaneity and colour are central themes, with an invocation of vivacity and joy.
I studied Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1986. Since then, I have regularly exhibited in galleries around the UK and abroad. For the last 4 years I have been the leader of the Scottish group of artists at the international watercolour convention in Italy, ‘FabrianoinAcquarello’.
I have won 2 prizes at the Royal Watercolour Society in London and was also shortlisted for the international watercolour prize ‘Marche d’Acqua’ in 2016. I have been shortlisted for the same competition (now known as the Watercolour Biennial) in 2022. I work from my Edinburgh studio, and when the flowers are in bloom, I can be found painting in the garden.

Lots of artists are now part of The Art Post collective. We will try to find an artist who is best suited for your project or commission. If you know who you would like to commission, feel free to specify the artists' name in the form.
We're asking artists to choose one notable person, place and object that has inspired them in their journey so far. We're mapping inspiration at a scale never attempted before
Dame Elizabeth Blackadder DBE RA RSA taught me at Edinburgh College of Art (1982-1986). A quiet, self-effacing person, she would work alongside her students, thus demonstrating her use of watercolour.
The Scottish Highlands, most especially Braemar and its surrounding area, are particular favourites of mine. The views up the valley towards the Linn of Dee with the ever-changing colours and light, rushing waters, forests and many wild flowers, draw me back frequently.
I have a coffee cup (Portmeirion Pomona) which has an image of a deep purple plum and leaves on it. I suppose, as I have my studio coffee in this cup every day, and have done for years, that this could be my most inspiring object!
We’re proud to collaborate with some of the world’s most exciting contemporary artists, bringing their work to new audiences. We’re passionate about helping them tell their stories authentically, and share their practice in creative ways.
