Lottie Stoddart's multi-disciplinary practice encompasses painting, ceramic, textile, animation and creative writing. These varied modes cross-pollinate in endless strains and variations around her core interest in narrative constructions; stories which are condensed, cut-up, distorted, layered and repositioned to create versions and inversions. An engagement with the evolution of literature underlies this process of distillation, where fictions are excavated and reinterpreted. Stoddart often stages these formations within a recessed space that has intimations of theatre, memory boxes and bass relief. She likens each component to be as specific as the word choice in a verse of free-form poetry, where the clews to a work's decoding lie in its illusion, materiality and humorous juxtaposition.
Stoddart is a British, London-based artist. In 2021, she graduated from The Turps Painting Programme after a postgraduate scholarship year at the Royal Drawing School (2015), and received a BA in English Literature from the University of Warwick (first class, 2011). She has been the recipient of multiple awards and residencies, including The TAGLI Collection and Mentoring Award (2023), the APT & Fenton Trust Award (2021), the Cyprus College of Art residency (2021) and the IIFA/RDS teaching residency to India (2016). She was recently selected for the British Ceramic Biennial (2023) and the Exeter Contemporary Open (2022) and had her first solo exhibition with The TAGLI in 2023.
