We're asking artists to choose one notable person, place and object that has inspired them in their journey so far. We're mapping inspiration at a scale never attempted before
Both the philosophical tradition of Chinese painting and Western Surrealist artists such as Salvador Dalí and René Magritte have had a profound influence on my work. I am particularly drawn to the poetic, symbolic qualities of Chinese ink painting, as well as the dreamlike, uncanny imagery found in Surrealism. These influences have shaped my approach to visual storytelling, symbolism, and emotional resonance.
The primeval forest has left a profound impact on me—especially when experienced in contrast to a vast city like Beijing. In the midst of concrete and steel, to suddenly encounter wild, ancient woods is to feel a force greater than ourselves. The forest doesn’t follow human logic or order; it operates by its own mysterious laws. This sense of sublime natural power—the collision between nature and the urban world—inspires me to explore themes of transformation, resistance, and the limits of human control.
One of the most inspiring objects for my work is a thousand-year-old tree deep within a primeval forest. It stands as a silent witness to the rise and fall of dynasties, to generations of human lives, conflicts, and emotions—all of which seem fleeting and powerless in its presence. The tree transcends the human scale of time and emotion. Its form, texture, and quiet endurance remind me that nature contains a kind of wisdom and permanence far beyond our own.
