The rivers of Sheffield run from high moors, down wooded valleys and through the city. For those of us who are lucky enough to live here, there is a certain elemental nature to the place where one can see the origin of these rivers up high on the hill tops. Knowing the peaty flows are gathered from those heather uplands - a totally different habitat - is highly satisfying. The clear, orangey brown hues of the water are a constant reminder that these rivers are not static features to be just observed from the bank, but dynamic networks of a myriad of streams gathered over a whole landscape. The light and dark thrown across the river here emphasises the reflective metal-like qualities of the water mixed with the shadows from trees. A place perhaps to spot trout darting along the riverbed.
