My relationship with the land is always positive – any wander brings mental benefit. My art is therefore a direct response to the beauty around me. I have always sought to minimise brush strokes inspired by impressionists such as Tom Thomson and more recently Hester Berry. I try to capture the essence of a place and connect with the viewer – this is my ultimate aim - to recognise and share beauty. The lockdown period for me has really emphasised the beauty that is in everyday places, forever changing through the seasons, weather and time of day. As an artist, this diversity increasingly opens my eyes as I seek inspiration for my painting. This view is from my local wood in the Rivelin Valley in Sheffield. Light, shadow and colour is what fascinates me, giving a brightness and uplifting quality to the image, capturing a moment in time.
