Many people have been separated from their family for almost 3 years since Covid. In a time of isolation, the series of drawings explore the theme of ‘home’. I asked myself what home means to me, and used Posca pens in vibrant colours to express the warmth of emotion. The project led to a series of my early memories of living with my grandparents and cousin. In many families in China, grandparents take on the main responsibilities of childcare. The parents are often a missing role from the family, because to support the family financially they both have to be away working. The drawings express how much I miss home, something has come into focus as I know I have fewer opportunities to see them in the future. Many Chinese people are closer to their grandparents than their parents, the grandparents play a key role holding families together; how many other families are being held together by their grandparents in Chinese society? What does it mean for society when they are gone?
